Knoxville Debate: Corker vs. "The Washington friends"

I was not able to catch the "Great Debate Part Deaux" last night. Here are a few links to some of the media's coverage of the event.

Bob took the Brilleary's to task last night on their Immigration Enforcement voting record. He landed a one-two-three combination on his "the Washington Friends".

Excerpts from a Press Release issued by Corker's Campaign last night.

Knoxville – Today, at the first televised debate of the Republican Senate primary, leading conservative candidate Bob Corker highlighted former Congressmen Bryant and Hilleary’s voting record on illegal immigration, pointing out that their votes don’t match the ‘get tough’ rhetoric they have been espousing on the campaign trail.

My Washington friends are talking the talk on illegal immigration, but when they were in Congress, they voted against several proposals to crack down on illegal immigration, allowing the problem to become a crisis,” said Bob Corker.

  • Congressman Bryant and Congressman Hilleary voted against a pilot program in which employers in at least five of the seven states with the largest number of illegal aliens would have to call an 800 number to verify the status of employees and applicants. (Vote 77, 3/20/96; H.AMDT 971)

  • Congressman Bryant and Congressman Hilleary voted against authorizing the hiring of 350 additional inspectors to prevent employers from using illegal immigrants. (Vote 408 9/11/96)

  • Congressman Hilleary voted against a proposal to improve the design of Social Security cards for security and anti-counterfeiting (Vote 72, 3/20/96; H.AMDT 964)

Corker vs. "The Washington friends"

Bob Corker is a hypocrite. If he'd won the Senate primary in '94 he'd be just as much a "Washington insider" as he claims Ed and Van are.

Corker has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from lobbyists, including $10K from lobbyists he hired to represent Chattanooga at taxpayer expense. Corker missed the first debate and President Bush's visit to TN because he was in DC raising money from lobbyists.

jb,
If, If, If,...
If Bryant would have beaten Alexander?
If Hilleary would have beaten Bredesen?
Where does this game lead?
Your "hypocrite" accusations are becoming a bit tedious and tiresome, which predicatively happens, when the facts shows them to be baseless and without merit.
The facts clearly show that both Ed and Van are and were "Washington Insiders, Beltway Buddies, D.C. Dons,....
You get the idea!

The hypocrisy charge comes from the fact that Corker is more of a "DC insider" than either Ed or Van. Corker sarcastically calls Ed and Van his 'Washington friends,' but Corker travels to DC to raise money from lobbyists and he's hired lobbyists at taxpayer expense. He's even got a "K Street Team" raising cash from other lobbyists for his campaign. Corker knows his way around DC too, he missed the first debate and President Bush's visit to TN because he was raising money from DC lobbyists.

Are these accusations without merit? Baseless? Check the FEC records. These are FACTS. Corker's campaign coffers are overflowing with money from DC lobbyists. As Ed said in the debate, "if I was still lobbying today, Bob would be hitting me up for money!"

Bob's "Washington friend" Ed Bryant has served his country in the U.S. Army, taught constitutional law at West Point, been a successful attorney, federal prosecutor AND Member of Congress.

I don't think Tennesseans could ask for a better resume from a U.S. Senator.

Why don't some of you actually look at these bills that Bryant and Hilleary shot down. Almost all Republicans and even many democrats shot them down in flames because they were bloated, massive appropriations bills that wouldn't have solved the problem in form or fashion. This is another attempt by the Corker campaign to divert attention away from Bob's own record and misrepresent that of Bryant and Hilleary's using lies and deceit. You can also note the key republicans to vote against that bill, including Tom Coburn and Dick Armey, both spending hawks and they are both very strong on immigration.

It really amazes me that the middle class in this country could even think about voting for an individual whose life is tied up in corporate oil. Come on people! He'll say anything to blow your skirts up and distract you from what he really needs your votes for. This man has repeatedly hurt the middle class worker, supported educational programs that have successfully dumbed down our youth and directed money away from our most valuable natural resource, our children, and rallied behind the most pointless war of our time! If Jesus were among us he'd be one pissed off hippy. What a waste of a wonderful nation's resources! Doesn't anyone care about fixing this country? We are the laughing stalk of the world. And I know some of us are on some kind of trumped up ego trip but the reality is that the attitude of Corker and his party has successfully united our enemies and divided our allies. And now we have real threats facing us...North Korea's nuclear program, Iran's growing nuclear program...not to mention the whole reason we supposedly went to war in the first place...Al Qaeda. Now we are so over extended in refereeing the civil war in Iraq that WE created that we can't even defend ourselves against the real threats. The power belongs to the people...not the rich oil tycoons. Quit giving the power to the rich, corrupt and bigoted. Make this country great again! I beg you...
